However, this is not true for all herbal remedies - the smell of valerian is rather unpleasant and not conducive to sleep at all, so is best taken in capsule form!

Natural Remedies for Insomnia

Tempting though it is to resort to medication for difficulties sleeping there are a wide range of natural remedies for insomnia. For example, herbal remedies have bee used for many years with great effect. A simple herbal remedy is to make up a small sachet of lavender flowers which you then place under your pillow. The aroma from the flowers have a soothing and relaxing effect which will help sleeping.

Alternatively, you can make up lavender into a tea which can be consumed prior to going to bed. Or, if you prefer there are lavender sprays available which can be sprayed over the sleeping area for a soothing effect.

Another herb that has been used as a natural remedy for insomnia for many years is valerian. In many parts of the world it is readily available as an over the counter insomnia remedy. It is not well understood how valerian works, but it has been shown to be effective for many people. Nevertheless, there are some people for whom it does not work particularly well. It does smell rather unpleasant in its natural state, so most people tend to take it in capsule form. You should be aware that it should not be taken with alcohol or certain medications. If you are unsure then you should consult your doctor before using.
